This week I want to briefly talk about the business model for our group project choc-rock. There has been questions raised about how to define the goal of our site. Here is the link to one of our group members' thought about this issue. http://reneespeak.wordpress.com/2009/05/26/week-twelve-thoughts/. The point is, of course, the following quote:

"...All of this got me thinking about Chocrock’s business model. Up untilnow we thought that advertising would cover the cost of overheads andjournalists’ fees. I’m starting to doubt that. I’m thinking that perhapswe can ditch the idea of advertising. It would have cheapened the site andcast doubt upon our credibility as unbiased reviewers. Instead, we’ll makethe site more community-built. Fellow Melburnian chocolate fans can addcontent to the site. We’ll encourage this by offering a gift voucher orother give-away from one of the companies we are linked to like Haigh’s,Max Brenner or Chocoholic Tours."

However, this is not the only way to do things. If we take this kind of thought is one side of extreme, then I shall talk about the other side of extreme, where the website is fuelled with bias, personally I feel it is not far from what every website is doing anyway. One example is the populaity of FOXNEWS.

This means instead of a community-built like website, I shall create a network where the sites will be sponsoured by chocolate shops. One can say this is the same as seeking advistings. Yes and no. Yes because we are still advisting for them, no because all the material we create are bias towards attracting consumer for them. Those the advisting space and banner are free up for other advisiting. Thus, we are being paid for all the materials we wrote about those shops, at the same time we could seek other advisiting which could turn to our long term sponsours as well. Even if not, we still have the existing sponsours . Hence, I think it is win-win situtation. Beside, just because we turn toward commerical based, it does not mean we can't have the Web2.0 stuff.

Of course, the first step I would still need to build up this community. Since it is far easier to attract sponsoure if you have a large community.

Therefore, what I suggest is two step thing, where step one build up community and step two commericalize the site. Think about it and take the Facebook or Twitter as an example, http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/technology/5588853/facebook-twitter-hunt-revenue/, they had a interest business model which are community, but they are also a business. I simple take it to the extreme. I found that extreme opinon maybe more likely to be wrong, but they are created a lot of interesting things to think about, like moral, financial, or ideal.

Anyway, I couldn't help but introduce you to the site our group build: http://chocrocks.wordpress.com/

I know it has only been two weeks since the last time Iooked at RapidSakisearch cedit of Sasa Rebic, but I found there are so much more stuff I analysis his blog from various other view points.

In the past, I have talked about how well Sasa oraginze his blog to be friendly, useful, and simple(+ informtive), which is as I have suggest before to be very important elements to a successful blog and utlimiately website. Needless, those are also underlying points that we have trying to attractive as editers.

Long story short, as an editier or would-be-editer I found one of the hardest thing is how to present information that allow people to absorb them while do not allow them to look like load of text books. It is hard and there are several ways to solve this.

1. Simple and interesting title

We can see very clear example in Sasa's sites. For most of the updates, their title are short. Of course, we cannot really say it is due to the solem effort of the blogger since the contain of his updates requires less title words to start with, but perhaps this is the point. Because his update had some kind of iconic contains, it allows his to use less words to express max. amount of information. For instance, under game sections all the title will of course be the title of the game. I dare say it would be stupd to add more complex words in the title.

Hence, the key for a interesting and simple title for your update is' seeking for iconic in your update'.

2. Pictures

The only thing I want to say is to quto the words of Geroge W.B. "The best thing about books is they have pictures". The home page of Sasa is full with example of this.

3. Understanding and attractive purpose

Now, here we came to a gray area. There are many ways of looking at this. One is about how big or small one many think about website's focus. Many people say a focused purpose is easiler to make a good website, like the website my group made, chocrock which is very focused on Chocolate in Melbourne. Of course, the small focus is majorly due to the limited time we have, but it doesn't stop the fact that the usefulness of site was be sharply reduce. It is still useful (don't get me wrong), but had less use in comparison to Sasa's blog.

Therefore, I would say, a focused purpose is easier to make a website, not a good website. One can have big objective, but still been focused. How? The answer is catergories. Take Sasa's blog for instance. His focus of the site is "Download films, music, game, software itd..." If you think about it, one can make a webiste for every single one of these, and every single one of those can have countless number of catergies. However, the trick is to know differeniate what is important to stand alone and what is not. Like the catergories "software for instance", there are so many kind out there, but the most important one "Anti Virus" and "Game", as result, those two had a different catergories, while the others do not have separate catergories.

Well, that is all for those week. Once again I thank for Sasa for put up his interesting blog http://rapidsakisearch.over-blog.com/ and I also hope you can visit the website of my group project http://chocrocks.wordpress.com/.

Thanks

Today, I brings exciting news. Well, at least it is for me and the chocolate web project group. It is because the chocolate website, I believe, it is ready to be see by the world.

Now, here is the direct link to http://chocrocks.wordpress.com/,

At this moment, there are only few articles exist under Special Menu (Featured articles) and Ancient Memory (History & Fact). There are also few direct links to the website mentioned in the article both within the writing and under the section called linkes. Finally, there are currently three suburb listed for anyone in the immediate area to find the chocolate shops.

There are still few works that need to be done, however, like I said before, this website is open for bussiness. Although I was completely excited as I wroten those words, it came to me as a bolt of lightening of how important a non-basised comment is. I mean there is a wise saying that it is easier to find fails in another person than in yourself.

This means that in some extend when one person comment or judge another person's website, it should not be taken for granted that the producers can see and judge things with the same value comparing to someone who has not set value towards the site in question. Of course, that may also suggest why someone could build an extremely crap website while not aware of his/her fail in this.

Deep philosophical problem isn't it?

Another thing, related in some ways, is the naming of the article title and categories we talked about this week. There is only one thing I wanted to mention. The article I wrote "Chocolate Medicinal or a Menace". It appear this title is very good, why? Because it is short, informative, and funy. Perhaps this is the key to create an attractive title.

Few weeks ago I have looked at one of the best blog I have find, http://rapidsakisearch.over-blog.com/, by Sasa Rebic. Now it is time to look at it again and see how it changed over time. Is it still one of the most useful blog or has it being over taken by others.

Last time I emphasised this word 'usefulnes' when I looked at Sasa's blog. Since the main focus is on download film, music, and software etc. I also mentioned last time that this usefulness is enhanced by the well structured cataorgies and how the page has been set up.

As I looked at it this time around, I had to say this once again. Sasa Rebic's blog is still one of the best blogs I have ever seen. Just look at some of the most recent update. There is the Graphic of Buring Letters from A to Z. There is also an addition on Imagicon. I don't know about you. But I am very interest about those updates even as far as curiousity goes. I think this is a very good point that nowadays a lot of website lacks. Despite their seemly endless updates, they fail completely to arouse the curiousity of the net user.

This led me to talk about how Sasa presented his information. Below this few print screen of how his home page of his blog looks like (currently), of course I am recommand you to go to the actual blog to see for yourself. Anyway:

Now, allow me to point out one very simple and obvious fact, information in Sasa Rebic's sites are being presented in a very attractive way. I do not just mean it is easy on the easy, rather not only his blog is useful, he also managed to show his personality. From the way he presented his contain, he showed, me at least, that he is really a fun guy to be friend with. The emphasis here is that this whole attractive personality thing is very successfully build inside his website.

To this end, I think website builders/editors should really learn something from Sasa Rebic, on how he was able to attract auidence. For instance his website has music just like thousand other sites, but the web he presented it is very personal like. Such as he used IPod imaginary, which a lot of us could quickly link to our everyday life. This way is much better than just give us just a list. I mean who have time to read those days. We need pictures, sound, imaginaries. The bottom line, we all now the online attention spend is decrease. I think the way Sasa Reblic do it is very success -- attract the net users and get his contain across.

Once again very well done Sasa Rebic and I shall continue to revisit your blog.

Monday 27 april 2009 1 27 /04 /Apr /2009 08:44

Well, this week I wanted to talk about how someone would normally analysis a speech. At least how I analysised it. To put it simply, I anaylsis use the three mode of perusations. Ethos, Pathos, and logos.

Ethos is about the speaker’s status, character, or moral competence. This is important because it tells audiences why they should listen to the speaker. Furthermore, if a speaker has a strong ethos, he/she will attract more audiences in comparison to those who have not. One way to build one’s ethos is inform the audience about your status such as your position of power. This way of build one’s status was very commonly seen in the press conference, where before a government official makes the statement on a certain issue, he/she needs to tell why his/her words are representing the authority. However, the best and most important way of build one’s ethos is to do with the speaker’s character (or for a lack of better word, person charm and charisma). Individual speaker demonstrate their character differently. For instance, Martin Luther King was seen as an activist of a human right icon. Whereas George W. Bush had an American cowboy image in people’s mind.

Pathos is to do with emotion. It is not just about how energetic the speaker talk, it also about whether the speaker is about to lead and make use of the audience’s emotion. This technique is commonly seen in vigorous speakers. For example, the speech ‘I have a dream’ by Martin Luther King has a lot of pathos element in it. Such as the last few phrases “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” The tension in the audience built up along with his arising voice, when he finally released it at the end the crowd, it was as if a dam had busted, everyone responded with the corrected emotion King intended.

The last component of persuasion is logos, which is a logical argument. Clearly if the speaker wants to convince the audience that he/she is right, he/she needs to present a good argument. The format for a logical argument is normally a chain of premises that lead to the undeniable conclusion. By keeping this format in mind, we could see many great speeches were indeed contained such argument. For instance, Lyndon Baines Johson’s ‘We Shall Overcome’ as an example, which had a chain of premises from the start. In order to presenting his equal right issue to the congress, he started with a recent event of a peaceful protest was faced with forceful suppression. This led people’s faith in the democracy of this country and the government’s duty to uphold it. This duty of uphold people’s faith ultimately led to the belief of ‘All man are created equal’. From this belief came the necessity of serious discuss the state of equal right issue in congress. As we can clearly see, there was a chain of reasoning in Johson’s speech which made his words convincing.

This talk is relevent to digital editing class because we need to make a website that is attractive to the audience. Thus, we have to try and use those technique to persade people in the way we want. Like if I wanted people to go and eat chocolate. I can tell them my site had all of useful stuff, we have everything there is to know about chocolate. This is a way of ethos -- to build status around your website. Or we can appealing to emotion like hunger, addictive etc. Lastly, we can tell them why it is good to eat chocolate, thus a form of logos.
