"...All of this got me thinking about Chocrock’s business model. Up untilnow we thought that advertising would cover the cost of overheads andjournalists’ fees. I’m starting to doubt that. I’m thinking that perhapswe can ditch the idea of advertising. It would have cheapened the site andcast doubt upon our credibility as unbiased reviewers. Instead, we’ll makethe site more community-built. Fellow Melburnian chocolate fans can addcontent to the site. We’ll encourage this by offering a gift voucher orother give-away from one of the companies we are linked to like Haigh’s,Max Brenner or Chocoholic Tours."
However, this is not the only way to do things. If we take this kind of thought is one side of extreme, then I shall talk about the other side of extreme, where the website is fuelled with bias, personally I feel it is not far from what every website is doing anyway. One example is the populaity of FOXNEWS.
This means instead of a community-built like website, I shall create a network where the sites will be sponsoured by chocolate shops. One can say this is the same as seeking advistings. Yes and no. Yes because we are still advisting for them, no because all the material we create are bias towards attracting consumer for them. Those the advisting space and banner are free up for other advisiting. Thus, we are being paid for all the materials we wrote about those shops, at the same time we could seek other advisiting which could turn to our long term sponsours as well. Even if not, we still have the existing sponsours . Hence, I think it is win-win situtation. Beside, just because we turn toward commerical based, it does not mean we can't have the Web2.0 stuff.
Of course, the first step I would still need to build up this community. Since it is far easier to attract sponsoure if you have a large community.
Therefore, what I suggest is two step thing, where step one build up community and step two commericalize the site. Think about it and take the Facebook or Twitter as an example, http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/technology/5588853/facebook-twitter-hunt-revenue/, they had a interest business model which are community, but they are also a business. I simple take it to the extreme. I found that extreme opinon maybe more likely to be wrong, but they are created a lot of interesting things to think about, like moral, financial, or ideal.
Anyway, I couldn't help but introduce you to the site our group build: http://chocrocks.wordpress.com/
